Spanish couple rescued at sea

The Colombian Navy rescues a Spanish couple off the coast of the port city of Barranquilla.

The pair ran into trouble late Tuesday when their vessel became stuck on a sandbar.

They had been travelling from Santa Marta, Colombia to Cuba.

Miguel del Castillo told reporters he hadn't been able to manoeuvre away from land.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) SPANISH NATIONAL MIGUEL DEL CASTILLO, SAYING:

"I got too close to the coast, I didn't see land, I didn't see the strip of land and when I tried to pull away it was too late and then the ocean started pushing us closer to land. It was a mistake that I made but what can I do? We are fine and that is the important thing."

The Colombia Coast Guard was notified that Castillo and his wife were in trouble, and dispatched a rapid response unit.

But due to inclement weather, Navy rescuers were unable to reach the Spaniards until the next day.
