STORY: Greek police and students scuffled at an anti-austerity protest in central Athens on Friday (February 17).

Violence broke out after students threw stones at riot police guarding parliament, who then responded by charging and forcing them to retreat to nearby Syntagma square.

At least three student were arrested, police said later.

Students had gathered to demonstrate against government reforms and spending cuts in education which caused shortages in schools, as well as wage and job cuts affecting their families.

The latest austerity bill, sets out 3.3 billion euros (4.35 billion U.S. dollars) in wage, pension and job cuts as the price of a multi-billion-euro rescue package from the European Union and International Monetary Fund - Greece's second since 2010.
