Once dubbed China's most wanted man, former fugitive Lai Changxing has been prosecuted for smuggling and bribery in China's southeastern city of Xiamen.

The city court of Xiamen is hearing the case, and state media says he faces life imprisonment rather than the death penalty.

Lai was deported from Canada back to China last year after an 11-year diplomatic struggle. He was immediately arrested and later pleaded guilty to extensive corruption charges.

He was accused of running a multi-billion dollar smuggling operation in Xiamen in the 1990s, bribing officials and evading billions of dollars of government taxes.

Lai fled to Canada in 1999 and sought asylum. Canada rejected his claim and deported him after assurances from Beijing he would not be tortured or given the death penalty.

But the decision was controversial as Lai's accountant and brother both mysteriously died in a Chinese prison and the Canadian court was not given their autopsy reports.
