PRESENTED BY LAYLA ANNA-LEE

I am a songwriter, singer backing myself on guitar or whatever else I can get my hands on. I picked up a guitar around the age of 14 and it gradually grew into an all consuming obsession which touched everything. Somewhere along the line I went from jotting little ideas and words to writing songs and singing more, whilst taking in an ever-expanding array of musical influences and benchmarks. Spent the last couple of years in a couple of shifting line ups of bands as well as dabbling in solo acoustic material and frequenting open mic nights. This was an important experience as it allowed me to form a clearer picture of what it is I want to do and create within music. Im currently honing my skills, experimenting and getting a feel for what is possible to get away with in a live music context. That and just getting my music out there. At the moment it is mainly solo voice and acoustic guitar. I have been playing round London on the acoustic and open mic circuit for the past few months as it has forced me to sharpen certain edges that can get hidden when you play with a loud band. Youre out there by yourself, just you and the audience and your songs youre exposed. It can be exhilarating. Having said that, Im rehearsing with a small band at the moment, with the intention of presenting something else that cant really be done in a solo acoustic format. Stay tuned hehe At the moment I feel like most music that is being made is too clean, and I dont feel it breathing. As if it has no humanity. No weird lulls or empty spaces. I want to make music that feels alive. Music with dirt under its fingernails. I want to write the kind of songs that stare you out and cut you when youre not looking. Stuff that sounds like it doesnt care if it is being recorded or not. Songs that make you sweat just listening to them. Music that sounds on edge I dont want my music to be a clean experience. I want people to feel either cleansed by it, or that they now need to wash. Either way I want to move and affect people. My influences are many and varied but I want to play the kind of music only made by dead people or those that dont smell so good. Generally I like the belligerent characters and those not afraid to stir things up a little. Hopefully theres a bit of everything in there; country, punk, rock, soul, weird old tunes and nursery rhymes its all good. Hope you like what hear.
