These are the latest victims of freezing weather in Europe.

Some 55 pink flamingos were found dead in southern France.

Local firemen combing the lakes said the animals were trapped in the frozen water, unable to fly away.

The League for Protection of Birds picked up some of the other fragile flamingos to send them to a bird park.

The birds were being bandaged in black cloth and put into large cartons for transportation.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) DIRECTOR OF THE LEAGUE FOR PROTECTION OF BIRDS OF AUDE, FRANCIS MORLON, SAYING:

"These birds have suffered from the cold wave. The ten days of cold have weakened them and so their energy reserves have reduced. And what happened was that on Monday, we had winds of 120km/hr and so the birds were not able to flee the peak of the cold and all the ponds of the region have frozen."

He added the last time they recovered so many dead flamingos was in 1985.
