STORY: Britain's Queen Elizabeth planted an oak tree on Friday (February 3) to mark her 60 years on the throne.

The event was part of a project that aims to create new woods across the country to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee.

Accompanied by her daughter, Princess Anne, the Queen planted the oak on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk in the presence of school children.

Princess Anne told the gathering that trees formed a part of royal celebrations. "There is another one here which was planted for your coronation by the Duke of Edinburgh, which sadly you wouldn't have seen today - Coronation Avenue - here on the estate. I literally grew up with those trees. And there is something very special about that as a form of celebration. It is literally engraved on people's memories. And I am sure that these Diamond Jubilee woods would be the same," she said.

A million trees are expected to be planted under the project in February alone.
