Deadly suicide blast strikes Afghanistan

The aftermath of a bomb attack in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar.
According to provincial officials, a suicide bomber killed at least four children and a policeman, and wounded a dozen other people near a police checkpoint on Tuesday.
(SOUNDBITE) (Pashto) ABDUL QAYON POKHLA, HEAD OF THE KANDAHAR PUBLIC HEALTH, SAYING:
"We have recovered five bodies including four children and one policeman and 15 wounded from the blast scene. The wounded are receiving treatment."
A local official said the bomber was targeting the police checkpoint.
Despite the presence of tens of thousands of Western forces in Afghanistan, the United Nations says violence is at its worst in the country since U.S.-led forces toppled the Taliban in late 2001.
