Norwegian PM visits South Pole
Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg arrives at the South Pole.
The trip to Antarctica is to mark 100 years since Norwegian Roald Amundsen and his team became the first people ever to reach the geographical south pole of the Earth.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) NORWEGIAN PRIME MINISTER, JENS STOLTENBERG, SAYING:
"I'm here to take part in the centenary of Roald Amundsen and his men. They were the first people ever to arrive at the South Pole and that was important for Norway but it was also a historic event and it's going to be marked on December 14."
The visit underlines the importance of Antarctica with respect to global climate change, and Stoltenberg will visit two research bases at the South Pole.
Roald Amundsen planted the Norwegian flag at the South Pole on December 17th 1911, pipping British naval officer Captain Robert Scott to the prize by just four weeks.
