STORY: Cristina Fernandez was sworn second term as Argentine president on Saturday in an emotional ceremony with some characteristically unconventional twists.
Thousands of supporters took to the streets, banging drums and waving flags, to herald her re-election.
Fernandez, a centre-left member of Argentina's dominant Peronist party, won a landslide re-election in October on the back of sizzling economic growth and a wave of sympathy following the death of her husband and predecessor as president, Nestor Kirchner.
Fernandez was heard to twist the words of the traditional ceremony to make specific reference to Kirchner. She swore to "God, the country and him", as the public cheered, knowing exactly who "he" was.
A second unconventional move came when Fernandez's daughter, Florencia Kirchner, handed her the presidential sash.
The 58-year-old leader's son, Maximo Kirchner, looked on proudly and Fernandez wiped a tear from her eye as she was handed the presidential baton for the second time.
Fernandez, still dressed in widow's black, spoke of her husband's death, her hard year and said she was a president of the people, not of the corporations.
