A gunman ambushed and shot dead a four-year veteran of the campus police force during a routine traffic stop.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) VIRGINIA TECH PRESIDENT CHARLES STEGER SAYING:
"Today tragedy again struck Virginia Tech with a wanton act of violence where a police officer was murdered during a routine traffic stop. In light of the turmoil and the trauma and the tragedy suffered by this campus by guns I can only say that words don't describe our feelings."
The shooter fled towards a nearby parking lot, where a body and a gun were later found.
Virginia State Police would not confirm the second body was that of the unidentified gunman.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) SERGEANT BOB CARPENTIERI OF THE VIRGINIA STATE POLICE SAYING:
"No additional victims or shooting reports have been given to the police department. So we feel confident that the situation is under control at this time."
The incident evoked grim memories of the April 2007 shootings in which a mentally ill student killed 32 people and wounded 25 more before committing suicide on the school's campus.
