Sora-no-hi or Sky Day is a festival usually celebrated on September 20th in Japan, but this year, Haneda Airport is celebrating it on October 21st to mark the first anniversary of their comeback to serve international flights. For the past three decades Haneda has only had domestic flights.

[Masayuki Sakurai, President, Tokyo International Air Terminal Corp.]:
“There is the Narita International Airport, but they are limited on their flight times. On the other hand, Haneda is 24-hours so we use the time that isn’t used by Narita and moved the operation to Haneda.”

Visitors were treated to Edo period-style booths at the event.

Sorakara-chan, the official mascot of Tokyo Sky Tree became president of Haneda Airport for one day in celebration.

The tower stands conveniently along the Keikyu line which is easily accessed from the airport without transfering.

Haneda International Airport was visited by 20,000 passengers and operated around 100 flights a day before the devastating earthquake that struck northeastern Japan earlier this year.
