Thousands of Apple fans around the globe waited in long lines to be the first to own a new iPhone 4s. Tony Fermin of Brooklyn, New York was the first in line at a Manhattan store...arriving at 10 o'clock the night before the 8am opening - for his first iPhone.
SOUNDBITE: TONY FERMIN, IPHONE BUYER (ENGLISH) SAYING:
"The phone better be worth it because I spent, I got wet, cold sleepy and I'm tired, just want to go home...and get the phone."
Fermin received a warm welcome as the doors finally opened.
The iPhone 4S looks a lot like the previous iPhone 4 but has an upgraded camera and a faster processor. There were some reported glitches with iCloud, email access and Apple's online communications, but the phone has earned glowing reviews from analysts and customers.
SOUNDBITE: KEITH COLON, IPHONE FAN (ENGLISH) SAYING:
"It's awesome."
Keith Colon was captivated by his new iPhone. His favorite feature, the highly regarded voice activated software Siri, an unpaid and yet gracious concierge of sorts: ask a question and you'll get the response in a matter of seconds.
SOUNDBITE: KEITH COLON, IPHONE FAN (ENGLISH) SAYING:

Other iPhone customers included the already converted:
SOUNDBITE: ANGEL GONZALEZ, IPHONE FAN (ENGLISH) SAYING:
"This is going to complete my collection of this year's Apple products I got MacBook Pro earlier in the year, iPad 2 so now iPhone 4S."
And the newly converted:
SOUNDBITE; LAUREL MOLL, IPHONE BUYER (ENGLISH) SAYING:
"I've heard nothing but good things about the iPhone."
The iPhone 4S was the final gadget unveiled during Steve Jobs' life, who died of cancer this month. And it was not lost on the legions of Apple lovers:
SOUNDBITE: ALICE MURPHY, IPHONE FAN (ENGLISH) SAYING:
"He really made his imprint on this generation in a very significant way, and this is a little memento to that."
Analysts point to several factors in Apple's favor: the $199 price tag that competes well with rival devices, availability on more than 100 carriers by year's end and the stellar reviews.
NAT SOUND: "Whoop!"
Many analysts expect a few million phones to be sold globally on the first weekend alone.
