A group of at least five South Korean journalists from a major South Korean newspaper were detained by Chinese authorities last Tuesday. The journalists were stopped by the Chinese-North Korean border and detained on charges of espionage.
According to a South Korean official, the journalists were traveling on a tourist visa.
Chinese law requires foreign journalists to have a journalist visa--and it has been known to arrest or expel South Korean journalists without one. This has been especially so since the Korean civil war in 1951 when China became North Korea's ally.
