The area of Anacostia in Washington DC is only a mile from Capitol Hill. It’s a place known for violence, drug dealing and a lack of prospects. But it’s here of all places you can find one of the best state schools in the USA.

The Thurgood Marshall Highschool was founded by socially engaged law students and professors at Georgetown University. After a shaky start, it’s now become a flagship project. It demonstrates that children from poor socio-economic backgrounds can become a success with the help of a good education. The quota of students who go on to college is currently 100 percent.
