A suicide bomber detonates a car bomb at a police headquarters in a city in northern Algeria, wounding 29. The city lies in a mountainous region where al Qaeda's north African wing is known to have their stronghold.
A suicide bomber attacked a police headquarters in the Algerian city of Tizi Ouzou early on Sunday, wounding 29 people.
The attacker tried to drive a Toyota pick-up truck packed with explosives into the police headquarters at 4:30 a.m. local time.
Tizi Ouzou lies about 60 miles east of the Algerian capital.
It is the capital of the mountainous Kabylie region, where al Qaeda's north African wing has a stronghold.
The site of the blast was quickly cleared up by the authorities, but buildings near the police headquarters had broken windows as a result of the explosion.
A similar suicide attack in 2008 targeted the headquarters of the police intelligence unit in Tizi Ouzou.
[Ramadan Tamani, Sweet Shop Owner]:
"When the call to prayer started, a Toyota car passed by and was parked in front of the police station. We were going to leave when we heard a loud noise and felt something like an earthquake. Then the front door fell on a staff member here, injuring him; as you can see, all his blood is here. The blast caused a lot of damage in the building and many people were injured, but no one died.”
Sunday's attack was the second of its kind in two months.
Two people were killed in July when a security bomber struck a police headquarters in the town of Bordj Maniel, a short distance west of Tizi Ouzou.
A few days later, the al Qaeda’s North African group, issued a communique saying it carried out the attack.
