A dozen people are injured today after an explosion on a cargo vessel in southeast China's Fujian Province. Investigations indicate that repair workers may be to blame.

Twelve people including four firefighters were hurt Monday night when a fire broke out after an explosion on a 5,000-ton cargo ship at a shipyard in Fujian Province.

Twenty-one crewmembers were on board the ship when the blast occurred.

Fuzhou fire officials say the injured were taken to hospital. Nine had sustained serious injuries.

It took firefighters about three hours to bring the blaze under control. Successive explosions hindered the rescue operation. Firefighters managed to remove combustible oxygen tanks and gas pitchers and pulled out all the ship's crew.

The vessel was being inspected and repaired at Kan'ao Shipyard on Pingtan Island when the accident happened.

A preliminary enquiry revealed that gas cutting equipment used by repair workers caused the explosions.
