Microsoft announced on Monday (July 4) that it's partnering with the Chinese Internet search engine Baidu.com.

The deal is meant to help Baidu provide better quality English-language search results, while giving Microsoft more access to China's 470-million Internet users.

Baidu is said to control roughly 83% of the Chinese Internet search market. Baidu representatives say the site routinely has search requests in English—hitting a daily average of 10 million.

The Bing-Baidu venture will start operating by the end of 2011.

If it goes as planned, English searches in Baidu will be redirected to Microsoft's Bing. The results will then be displayed in a version of Bing housed on the Baidu site.

Bing searches will most likely be censored as the Chinese regime keeps a tight grip over Internet companies operating in the mainland.
