Aung San Suu Kyi Urges Burmese Regime To Release All Political Prisoners

Democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi is urging Burma's military-backed government to release political prisoners. Although a mass amnesty is currently seeing about fourteeen thousand inmates set free, fewer than fifty of them so far are political prisoners. Suu Kyi says there are more than two thousand political prisoners still locked up.
Just 47 political prisoners were among those freed in a mass amnesty in Burma this week. That's according to the opposition to Burma's military-backed leaders. Activists are urging the military-backed government to release the estimated 2,100 that remain behind bars.
The National League for Democracy, a banned political party and Burma's biggest pro-democracy group, says just 23 of its members were among the 47 activists released on Tuesday.
[Aung San Suu Kyi, National League For Democracy]:
"If the political prisoners are not freed, then we will have to question the remarks made by the new government regarding heading toward democracy. Whether it was true or they really meant it with true good will."
Yangon's notorious Insein Prison released more than 2,000 inmates on Tuesday, but activists say only two political detainees were among them.

"So long as they remain in prison it will hamper the national reconciliation process and will also be hurtful for our nation. Individuals deemed useful and valuable for our country are locked up without being able to contribute anything for the country."
Burma's new regime began freeing about 14,000 prisoners and commuting thousands more sentences on Tuesday... in an amnesty critics dismissed as a token to improve its international image.
