U.S. fighter jets fly out of Aviano air base in Northeast Italy as Italian media reports that U.S. jets were engaged in fighting over Libya. It comes after one U.S. plane crashed in Libya overnight on Monday. Here's more.

Several U.S. jets flew out of Italy's Aviano Air Base on Tuesday as Italian media reported U.S. jets were engaged in fighting over Libya.

The reports could not immediately be verified.

Missions continued to be flown from the air base despite the downing of a U.S. plane in Libya overnight.

A U.S. military Africa Command spokesman said a U.S. Air Force F-15E fighter jet crashed in Libya on Monday after a mechanical failure, but its crew were safe.

Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that the fighter jet came down near the eastern city of Benghazi.

Libyan rebels rescued the pilot after he ejected from the plane.
