Chilean Miners Visit Jerusalem's Old City

Rescued Chilean miners, who spent 68 days trapped underground, visited Israel during this and last week (following an invitation by the Israeli Ministry of Tourism). Our correspondent joined them on a tour of holy sites in Jerusalem's old city (on Feb 24).
Rescued Chilean miners gathered at Jerusalem Old City's Lion's Gate, before setting out to the Via Dolorosa, or the Way of Sorrows. According to the Christian tradition, it is the very same path Jesus walked on the way to his crucifixion.
Just five months earlier, in October 2010, these same miners were trapped for two months in a gold and copper mine in northern Chile, 625 meters underground. Their rescue operation was broadcasted live to viewers around the world.
But, although now safe and sound, the memories are still fresh in their minds.
[Victor Zamora, Rescued Miner]:
“I was afraid I would not see my family again. I was afraid all the time, but my greatest fear was not to get the chance to ask the forgiveness of those people whom I had hurt.”
Rescued miner Salvator Agoza says they never dreamed they would be able to visit Jerusalem.
[Salvator Agoza, Rescued Miner]:
“It was extremely difficult during all those 69 days we were in that mine. But we did not lose faith and we all prayed to God every day. We did not dream then that a visit to Jerusalem could be more than just a dream.”
Alicia Campos is the mother of one of the rescued miners.
[Alicia Campos, Mother of Miner Daniel Harrera Campos]:
“The hardest thing was not knowing what was happening with my son, not to hear from him for such a long time.”
The miners walked all 13 stations along The Way to the place of Jesus' crucifixion in Mount Golgotha.
