William and Kate go back to university

Prince William and his bride-to-be Kate Middleton have returned to the place where their fairytale romance began - the University of St Andrews.

The couple were once students at the Scottish institution, but they have now been invited back as guests of honour, to launch its 600th anniversary celebrations.

Miss Middleton was dressed in a red coat with a black belt and black leather gloves, while William wore a dark blue suit.

Big names from around the world have praised what St Andrews has achieved, including former US president Bill Clinton, and Bond star and St Andrews honorary graduate Sean Connery.

Connery said: "There is nothing like a challenge to bring out the best in man, and for six centuries St Andrews has been challenging established wisdom and challenging its students and teachers to push the boundaries of knowledge."

William and his fiancee began dating while sharing a house in St Andrews, a picturesque seaside town in Fife, almost ten years later they will marry with the world watching on April 29.

William graduated in 2005 with a 2:1 honours degree in geography after switching subjects, while Kate achieved the same award in history of art.

University teaching staff there say the close-knit community helped the couple keep their romance a secret.
