The first pictures of Meryl Streep performing as Margaret Thatcher have been released by Pathe Films.

The oscar-winning star is widely considered to be the most talented actress of her generation, famed for her intense character roles, and was the first choice to play Thatcher in the biopic.

The Iron Lady is directed by Phyllida Lloyd, who was at the helm for Streep's most recent box office hit, Mamma Mia.

The movie charts the 13 day period leading up to the Falklands war in 1982.

Streep will be joined on screen by Jim Broadbent, who will play Dennis Thatcher, and Richard E Grant as Michael Heseltine.

The film is to be released later in the 2011.
