It was a tournament fit for a king. The Golden Jubilee cup polo tournament returned to Jodhpur, India last week. Let's take a look at some of the action.

Described as a once in a lifetime polo event, the Golden Jubilee Cup tournament returned under the Royal Salute banner for a second year in Jodhpur, India last week.

The Maharaja of Jodhpur hosted the invitation 10-goal tournament. International teams competed on the historic polo field beneath the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace.

The Royal Salute Maharaja of Jodhpur's Golden Jubilee Cup was won by the Jodhpur Knights in the final. While Jaipur and Delhi now host the largest tournaments on the Indian polo calendar, Jodhpur's season is indisputably the most exclusive, historic and traditional.

[Robert Mehn, Polo Player]:
"Without doubt this has been my most positive international polo experience. India is obviously such a fascinating country from a cultural standpoint and thanks to royal salute they've really brought together all the best elements of it, the exoticism, their tradition of polo."

Polo was first played in Jodhpur in 1889 and was mainly for high society. The Jodhpur Lancers, as they were known, were actually the first Indian polo team to travel abroad. A number of well known English men such as a young Winston Churchill and Lord Mountbatten have also played for the team.

However, the golden era for polo in Jodhpur in the 1920s and 1930s suffered something of a hiatus with the outbreak of World War II and never really recovered until the late 1990s.

This polo extravaganza saw eight teams do battle for Jodhpur's most coveted polo prize, the Royal Salute Maharaja of Jodhpur Golden Jubilee Cup. Following a fiercely contended four-day tournament, the top teams that emerged were Umaid Bhawan Palace, Hariana Polo Club, the Jodhpur Knights and Hyderbad Polo and Riding Club.
