Wedding Shopping in the Rust Belt | Made in Germany

A new shopping district has emerged in the shadows of the Duisburg steel works. A few years ago, most of the storefronts in the neighborhood of Marxloh were empty. But now Turkish wedding stores line the streets. The shops attract young couples not only from the surrounding Ruhr region, but also from as far as far away as Belgium and the Netherlands. The fledgling businesses received support from the city of Duisburg and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The European Union also chipped in with 400,000 euros from structural funds for regional development. The seed money has helped entrepreneurs create a vibrant shopping district in an area that has had its share of economic troubles.
