An exciting find for scientists in northeast Thailand. They say they’ve found an ancient crocodile skull older than any other they previously came across… dating back 100 million years.

Scientists in Thailand say they have discovered an ancient species of crocodile estimated to be about 100 million years old.

The crocodile fossil, with a nearly eight inch skull, was found in northeast Thailand.

Scientists say the skull is a rare find in the area.

[Professor Komsorn Lauprasert, Crocodile Fossil Researcher]:
“We often find only the tooth of crocodiles. We rarely find complete skulls like this. In Thailand, most of the parts we've found are often broken or sometimes, only the jaw bone.”

Researchers have asked villagers to help find more fossils.

[Professor Pratueng Jintasakul, Director, Petrified Wood Museum]:
“The area that we found the crocodile skull, we've also found a variety of bones, but at that time, we did not know that we would find the crocodile fossil. We only knew that there were many bones. We told the villagers in that area, that if they found any rocks that have bones in it, please give them to the museum.”

The skull is being displayed at the Northeastern Research Institute of Petrified Wood and Mineral Resources.

Numerous fossils, including dinosaur bones, have been found in northeast Thailand.
