A stampede on a bridge in Cambodia has killed at least 330 people and wounded hundreds more.

The disaster struck as Cambodians gathered to celebrate the final day of the three day annual water festival.

Prime minister Hun Sen announced the deaths on local television and said he expected the numbers of those injured fatally to continue rising.

According to state television most of those killed are women. A cameraman and a witness said they saw more than 100 bodies at city hospitals.

Most of the victims were crushed or drowned, after thousands panicked when several people were electrocuted while celebrating the end of an annual water festival. Many people died after leaping from the bridge across a tributary of Tonle Sap river in Phnom Penh, authorities said.
