About 40 Maoist rebels attacked this police station at Kakiriguma, in India's Orissa State on Tuesday.

Heavily armed rebels triggered an explosion, set fire to records, and torched a police jeep.

Locals heard the explosion.

[Ashish Ku, Local]:
"Yesterday night at around 10 o'clock, 30-40 Maoists came here at the police station. At around midnight they triggered one blast that was followed by another 5 minutes later. The whole area shook and echoed as a result of the blast."

No casualties have been reported.

Massive combing operations have been launched to trace the Maoists in the area.

According to police, the explosion was in retaliation to the recent arrest of Maoist leaders in the district.

Maoists have spread into rural pockets of 20 Indian states. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has declared them the nation's gravest internal security threat.
