Cyclone Storm Jal Hits Western India

A cyclone hits in India's Gujarat state. It’s expected to cause high tidal waves, making it very dangerous for local fishermen.

Cyclone storm Jal has hit the Indian state of Gujarat with heavy rain and strong winds. The storm is also likely to trigger high tidal waves.

The meteorological department has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.

[Mohan, Fisherman]:
"The cyclone is approaching and that's why we are pulling our boats out of the sea. We have to take all our boats because of the heavy tide."

Local authorities are preparing for the worst.

[Ajitsinh Zala, Deputy Collector]:
"All the departments including police, fisheries, port and other departments like the STB, state transport are taking all precautionary measures after the cyclone warning."

This year the monsoon has been particularly heavy across India, causing damage worth millions of dollars.
