In Australia, the 2010 Sydney Peace Prize winner has been announced. Dr Vandana Shiva is one of India’s top physicists and leading environmentalists. Let's hear more from our team in Melbourne, Australia.

Philosopher, eco-feminist and environmental activist, Dr Vandana Shiva is one of the original tree huggers from the 1970s.

[Dr Vandana Shiva, Sydney Peace Prize Recipient]:
“The women were coming out to hug the trees; you’ll have to kill us before you kill the trees.”

Fast forward 30 years and her unwavering determination to speak out and help others hasn’t diminished one bit.

[Dr Vandana Shiva, Sydney Peace Prize Recipient]:
"When patterns on life and genetic engineering were started, I have been resisting them because both assault the integrity of life."

Dr Shiva has just won this years’s prestigious Sydney Peace Prize for her commitment to social justice. The 57-year-old has been recognized for her efforts towards empowerment of women in developing nations and her scientific contribution to climate conservation.

Dr Shiva was presented with the Peace Prize on November 4 in Sydney before heading to Melbourne to give a lecture and host a book signing for her book Staying Alive.

[Meera Govil, Bookshop Owner]:
“I think she deserves the peace prize because with her philosophy, she does stop us from harming each other and causing violence, and I think that is a great message of peace that she has given in all her work and in all her life.”

[Dr Vandana Shiva, Sydney Peace Prize Recipient]:
“Do I live myself for others…yes, I live my life just for others. I don’t keep any spare time for myself.”
