Chinese dissident wins Nobel Peace Prize

Imprisoned Chinese pro-democracy activist Lui Xiaobo has won the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.

Liu will receive the prize, including $1.5m at a presentation in Oslo on Dec 10.

The dissident was jailed for 11 years last December for writing a 2008 manifesto with other activists that calls for free speech and multi-party elections.

The decison to award Liu the honour was anticipated by Beijing but bitterly criticised. The Nobel Committee has been seeking to restore its authority after criticism of the 2009 pick of US President Barack Obama.

A poet and literature professor, Liu is serving an 11-year jail term for "inciting subversion of state power" - after signing a 2008 manifesto calling for democratic reform in China.

The 54-year old has become a symbol of opposition to China's Communist Party, which has shown no signs of yielding to Western calls to release him and ease restrictions on political critics and human rights activists.
