Gambia: Fighting Climate Change | Global 3000

Gambia has been hit hard by climate change. Rising sea levels result in frequent floods, while the water table has sunk as a result of global warming. Rather than using diesel generators as in the past, local residents are now using solar-powered pumping stations to convey water from underground wells to the surface. A hundred of these solar systems have been installed so far. For eight hours a day, the systems produce clean energy, which then drives the pumps. They in turn pump the water into huge tanks that supply public stations. The project is being conducted by the Gambian government, and financed largely by the European Union.
