Indian security forces shot and killed five militants in a gunfight in the Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

Officials say the militants started firing in retaliation when security personnel challenged them.

[Lt. Col. J. S. Brar, Public Relations Officer, Defense Srinagar]: (hindi)
"We have confirmed reports of four militants being killed and we have reports of a fifth militant also being killed. There were a total of five militants in the area and a search operation is still in progress."

Brar says that 28 militants have been killed this month alone.

All the deceased militants are believed to be members of Hizbul Mujahideen.

India says Pakistan incites trouble in its half of Kashmir. Pakistan says it only lends moral support to what it says is the local people's independence struggle. This has been an ongoing conflict which broke out in 1989, and has killed more than 47,000 people.
