Baby rhino born at Whipsnade

Conservationists are celebrating after a rare rhinoceros calf was born in captivity.

The baby greater one-horned rhino is one of the newest arrivals at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire.

The male calf is less than a fortnight old, but already weighs 13 stone and could weigh as much as 2,700kg when fully grown.

The species is native to northern India and southern Nepal, but they were nearly hunted to extinction in the 19th century and there are thought to be fewer than 3,000 left in the wild.

Staff at the zoo have named the baby A-jang, which means enormous in Nepali.
