The United States' NASA space agancy is due to retire its space shuttle fleet in 2011, and museums across America are bidding to Exhibit the retired vehicles. The USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York city is one of them. Now New York State Assembly Members have given their support to the bid. Heres more from Ben Hedges, our New York correspondent...

The USS Intrepid, a World War II aircraft carrier, now sits moored on the Hudson River in New York, and has become the largest air and space museum in the world.

The museum already exhibits some of the most advanced aircraft on the planet, including SR-71 Blackbird spy plane and the Concorde, the world’s only supersonic passenger airliner.

But now they want more…

NASA will be retiring its three remaining Space Shuttles by 2011 and museums around the US are pitching their bids to exhibit the vehicles.

In New York, State Assembly members have unanimously passed a resolution supporting the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space museum’s bid to exhibit one of the retired Space Shuttles.

Assembly Member Micheal DenDekker introduced the resolution…

“The personal pride that it would bring to have a piece of space history located right here in the city of New York is something that makes me glow and warm inside.”

“It’s hard to imagine any place in America where more people will get to see the Space Shuttle than right here in New York on the Intrepid.”

“The Intrepid draws millions of visitors from around the world, to see its flight deck, its old World War II era flight craft and I think that putting the Space Shuttle here would just be a tremendous draw for children.”

The retirement of the Space Shuttle marks the end of an era for NASA.

“I believe it is the largest honor that could be bestowed, not only on the city of New York, the State of New York but also on the USS Intrepid.”

The Intrepid Museum is still waiting to hear whether NASA will give them the honor of exhibiting the Space Shuttle.
