Whoopi Goldberg makes her West End debut this week in Sister Act The Musical.

As co-producer of the stage version of her hit 1992 film, Goldberg had initially ruled out appearing when the show launched last year. It was confirmed last month however that the star would join the production for a limited time in August.

Goldberg takes over from Over The Rainbow judge Sheila Hancock in the role of Mother Superior for three weeks.

"It's a big deal," the star said ahead of her first performance. "It's The Palladium and it's London, and it's my first stage production here that I'm in."

The US comedienne originally played the part of Deloris Van Cartier in the film Sister Act and its sequel. Deloris is currently portrayed on stage by Patina Miller.

Sister Act The Musical is due to move from the West End to Broadway at the end of the year.
