Zedonk foal shows off racing stripes

A rare zebra/donkey hybrid foal has become the star attraction at a US wildlife park.

The animal, born last week at the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve in Dahlonega in north Georgia, is a zedonk or zonkey - the unusual offspring of a zebra father and donkey mother cross.

Named Pippi Longstocking, the foal has stocking-like black stripes prominently displayed on her legs.

Donkeys and zebras don't usually mate, but zedonks turn up occasionally as both species are members of the horse family.

The Chestatee Wildlife Preserve owns a handful of female zebras and just one male.

The owner said the preserve keeps donkeys with the zebras because they help keep them calm, but said this was the first time he's ever known them to mate.
