SS Lord Strathcona Wreck Dive, Newfoundland

The SS Lord Strathcona off Bell Island, Newfoundland, was sunk as a result of a torpedo from a German submarine sneaking into Conception Bay during WW2. The ship was an English-built merchant ship designed to carry iron ore from the mines on Bell Island to their final destinations across Atlantic.

The Lord Strathcona lies in around 28m of water and is around 130 m long. She is the sister ship of the SS Rose Castle (see other video). She features a stern gun, well preserved superstructures with plenty of swim-throughs, although amidships was severely damaged when the torpeds struck her. Lord Strathcona went down on September 5, 1942, two months before Rose Castle and LPM-27, and on the same night as Saganaga, struck by a torpedoes fired by German U-boat U-513.

Filmed while diving with Ocean Quest using a Sont HC-7 camera in a Gates housing. Ambient light was used for most of the dive however a pair of Squid 250s were on hand to provide a little extra light when required.
