Plane Crash in Romania Kills Eleven People

Eleven are killed in plane crash in southeast Romania. The plane with 13 people on board crashed shortly after take off from an airport in Tuzla.

TheRomanian Defense Ministry has confirmed that eleven people have died on Monday when a military aircraft carrying 13 people crashed soon after take off. They were departing from an airport in the southeast Romanian town of Tuzla.

The aircraft, an Antonov An-2, belonged to a small military air force school.

A defense ministry statement says the aircraft had been on a flying mission as part of a parachute training operation when it crashed.

On board were four crew and nine members of the naval forces.

The plane crashed shortly after take-off and caught fire when it hit the ground.

Firefighters put out the flames around 35 minutes later as weeping relatives gathered at the crash site.

A doctor coordinating the rescue says that three survivors were rushed to hospital in the nearby city of Constanta, and are in a critical condition. One of them has since died.

Defense Minister Gabriel Oprea has appointed a commission to investigate the cause of the crash.
