Ryanair proposes standing area on planes

The boss of budget airline Ryanair has announced plans to introduce a new standing area which will cost passengers only £5.

Michael O'Leary has said he will fund the new "vertical seats" at the back of planes using a "toilet tax" which will see passengers charged £1 to use the onboard bathroom.

The airline is looking at taking out the last ten rows of seats and replacing them with the new standing area.

Proposals have been discussed with Boeing and there are plans for tests to get under way in around 12 months.

According to a spokesman from the airline, the new seats could be in place in only 18 months time.
