More than 2,000 Political Prisoners (Including monks, students, teachers, elected Members of Parliament, lawyers and activists) are held captive 'without a fair trial' and are tortured and given lengthy prison sentences, because of their beliefs and political activities.

Arrests and Detentions in Burma, usually occur at night, and without proper Warrants being issued. Victims are often taken directly to Interrogation Centres, without having been informed of the charges or reasons why they are being detained.

'Torture' is frequently used as a means of obtaining 'false confessions' or testimony to establish 'guilt'. 'Torture' during pre-trial detentions and Interrogation Sessions have resulted in the deaths of detainees. These deaths typically remain 'uninvestigated' !
