Originally El amor brujo is a " musical gypsy story" in 16 paintings for chamber orchestra and cantaora (singer of flamenco); it is a pantomime danced with dialogues and songs the spirit of which is close to The History(Story) of the soldier of Stravinski. Falla composes it at the request of Pastoria Imperio, then considered as one of the biggest dancers of flamenco.
