Race to save over 100 workers trapped in mine

Rescue efforts continue to try and save about 153 workers that have been trapped down a mine for two days in China.

Anxious relatives waited outside the pit in the Xiangning county in the Shanxi province, for news on their family members. Hopes are fading as water levels could be too high to sufficiently pump out.

It could be one of the worst disasters to hit the deadly industry in recent years. Over 1,000 rescuers joined the operation in the hope of finding survivors or recovering bodies.

Rescuer Jin Maiguang said: "We are racing against time and doing everything we can to put the pipes together, pump out the water and reach those who are trapped underground."

China has the world's most deadly coal-mining industry, with more than 3,000 people killed in mine floods.

Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang has gone to the Wangjialing mine to supervise the rescue operation
