The Cathedral of Arequipa began as a modest chapel, built in 1544 by the mason Pedro Godinez. It acquired the title of Cathedral when Arequipa’s first bishop was appointed in 1600.
The first walls were cut from volcanic sillar stones supporting a wooden roof.

After several earthquakes in the eighteenth century, the Cathedral was rebuilt with sturdier stone and brick. It’s now 60 meters long and 28 meters wide.

The Cathedral is unusual in that its façade occupies the full north side of the city’s main square, the Plaza de Armas, and its long side fronts the square, on entering the church you have to turn right to see the altar.

which is fashioned from Italian Carrara marble.
