El Misti is an active volcano and an almost perfect cone standing 5,820 metres or 19,100 feet above sea level. It looms over Peru's second largest city, Arequipa, and can be seen from most open spaces in the city.

Its last major eruption was in the 15th century, when it forced the evacuation of Arequipa.
It is technically one of the easiest ascents of any mountain of its size in the world, and represents one of Peru's most popular climbs. El Misti is snowless for much of the year, offering a good steady trek to the top Six Inca mummies were found in one of the inner cones of the volcano in 1998. They’re now on display in the Andean Sanctuaries museum in Arequipa..
