Climate: The Philippines | Global 3000

Rainstorms are an increasing problem in the countryside and on the coasts of the Philippines. The southeastern island of Negros is a prime example. For decades, the forests here were radically cleared to make way for sugar cane plantations. The mangrove forests on the coasts were sacrificed for firewood. The consequences of this unsustainable exploitation are now being felt, but people are changing their attitudes. Children are being taught how important trees are for their lives. Germany is providing support for these efforts, and the forest is gradually recovering.
