Tokyo Auto Salon Tune-Ups in 2010

The Tokyo Auto Salon is underway, exhibiting the newest mods and tune-ups for Japanese cars.

Although car sales are slumping worldwide, aftermarket parts and accessory sales have not been hit as hard according to Tokyo Auto Salon President Fumiaki Enomoto.

[Fumiaki Enomoto, President, Tokyo Auto Salon]:
“The number of cars at our event is up 12%. The reason is because of the recession. People can’t buy new cars and young people especially get bored of their cars. So people change the interior and exterior of their car to get a fresh new feeling. This is the direction we see.”

To hype up their latest concept sports car, the FT-86, Toyota teamed up with GAZOO Racing to make this turbo-charged compact beast: the FT-86 G Sports Concept.

[Yuichi Tsurumoto, Manager, Toyota Sports Vehicle]:
“Because of the aftermarket turbo, you have a more powerful ride. On the racing track, for example, you can enjoy a type of slide-control called drifting. We made a more high-powered experience with this car.”

Expect to see the FT-86 go on sale in late 2011 in time for the 25th anniversary of the Corolla AE86, the car the FT-86 is modeled after.

Here is GAZOO Racing’s Toyota Prius tuned for greener performance. It’s sure to make your neighborhood eco-drivers envious.

[Kenichi Sato, Assistant Manager, Design Group Toyota]:
“If you look at it from the front, it has a big-mouth bumper. There are several other places that we modified as well. The hood is carbon fiber, so are the roof and backdoors. We’ve lowered the center of gravity and it’s lightweight. We’ve also improved airflow, even along the side of the tires.”

Aftermarket parts and service company Liberty Walk is in the business of modifying Lamborghinis. They also make full body kits for buggies to look like a Lamborghini… the next best thing to a $400,000 supercar.
