Lawmakers Brawl in Taiwan

A brawl breaks out in Taiwan’s parliament over legislation to appoint district magistrates.

Members of the ruling Nationalist Party and opposition Democratic Progressive Party climbed onto the speaker’s podium, wrestled and pulled at each other’s clothes.

The dispute was over a proposal made by the Nationalist party to amend the Local Government Act to directly appoint district magistrates rather than select them through election.

Despite the dispute, the amendment was passed.
