India Marks Asian Tsunami Anniversary

India marked the fifth anniversary of the Asian tsunami by holding prayers.

Twelve and a half thousand people lost theirs lives here as the tsunami struck the country‘s eastern seaboard.

Today fishing nets and boats lay idle on the beaches.

Fishermen are staying off the sea as a sign of mourning for the tsunami victims.

In one town that lost 6,000 residents, the fishermen placed flowers on the graves of the victims.

[Boominathan, Fisherman]:
"It is really very unfortunate that the tsunami has taken away the lives of innocent people, we have gathered to pay homage to the people who have lost their lives in the calamity."

And in this fishing village the locals have stayed out of the water on this day since 2004.

[Ashok, Local Resident]:
"Every year, every fishermen don't go for fishing...everyday we go for fishing at 3 (local time) o'clock. Now all the people who have not gone for fishing...today, they are conducting one festival here. All the ladies bring some milk and...coconut milk...and they throw into the sea because we thought
(the tsunami) affected this area."

The Tsunami was triggered by a massive undersea earthquake which, struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
