Turkey: Preventing Honor Killings | European Journal

In parts of Turkey where archaic codes of honor still dominate,murders of women are commonplace - even today. Last year saw 220 such 'honor killings'. Laws designed to prevent them have been tightened mainly in response to pressure from the EU,which has made improved women's rights a condition for the country's accession.Raised public awareness of the issue has already proved constructive: Increasingly,women who feel under threat are turning to women's groups for support,before it's too late. Our report from Diyarbakir shows how women can be saved from certain death.
