The Chapel of La Merced is considered a national monument, and not just because its a magnificent example of original Spanish colonial architecture — one of the few remaining in Huancayo. It also played an important role in Perus history as an independent nation.

It was here that the Constituent Congress met in 1839 and signed the Peruvian Republics Constitution.
The chapels interior holds an extensive collection of Cusco School Baroque era paintingsa religious art movement that swept through South America in the 17th and 18th centuries. Artists used bright colors, a lack of perspective, local cuisine, animals and plants in depictions of biblical figures and a great deal of gold, to create a bold style, that distinguished Peruvian painters from their European teachers.

The church of the Immaculate Conception is another architectural highlight of a visit to the center of Huancayo.
